A Deeper Look: The Tradition of Yoni Steaming

Yoni steaming is an ancient and respected practice used by traditional midwives and healers across cultures to support uterine health.

Historical accounts describe its use among Indigenous communities of Central and South America, where it was considered a foundational form of women’s care—used for menstrual support, postpartum healing, and overall uterine wellness.

From a traditional perspective, the warmth of the steam helps to soften tissues, increase circulation, and support the natural cleansing processes of the uterus. Herbal vapors carry plant compounds that have been valued for their soothing, antimicrobial, and toning properties.

This practice is not about forcing the body—but about creating the conditions for it to release, restore, and rebalance.

It is both simple and profound. A ritual of warmth, stillness, and care.

A Note on Practice

Yoni steaming is best approached with intention and awareness.

Each body is different, and timing matters—especially in relation to your cycle, postpartum healing, or specific conditions. When in doubt, seek guidance from a trained provider.

If you’re new to steaming or would like support, you can schedule a Connection Session with Tamy for guidance on how to safely and effectively create a home practice.

Yoni steams are an all but forgotten, old, and respected treatment for those with vaginas and uteruses and used by midwives and traditional healers across the globe to care for and support the uterus. The practice is mentioned in early writings of  Spanish friars who took time to record the healing practices of the Maya and Aztec. Bajos (ba-hoes) as they are called in Spanish, are a common and effective treatment for many complaints and rites of passage.  Traditional midwives gave these steams within 1-9 days after childbirth depending on the personal preference and the woman’s condition. It is easy to try this self care at home. Steep herbs in a basin of hot water, and find a quiet place to relax with the steam below your bottom. Sounds confusing? Schedule a free Connection Session with me (Tamy) and I will walk you through detailed instructions on how to do a successful steam at your house, or how to throw a yoni steam party with friends.
